Born in Spokane, Washington, Gloria Houng recently completed a MFA in Fine Arts degree at Goldsmiths, University of London. She has degrees in Sculpture and English Literature respectively from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and the University of California, Berkeley. Having previously trained as a painter, sculptor, and carpenter, Houng is now pursuing photography and video as her principle media.
Gloria Houngʼs recent artworks are photographic documentations of framed and reframed moments that straddle the narrative and performative. Narratively, they ambiguously encompass events that are perhaps part- travelogue, part-autobiographical. Performatively, they are caught between willful actions and happy accidents. Many are photographs of photographs, creating a deliberate confusion in the spacial construction of what is depicted. The works are windows onto an intimately contextualized world.
